dc.abstract.en Making decisions on the medical care of people who, due to their health condition, are unable to make them by themselves is an important and complex problem for those who provide such services. One of the main emerging difficulties is the ignorance of preferences and values important for the patient in the face of their disease and activities in connection therewith. One of the solutions available to such problems is the possibility that patients appoint their health care agents whose task is making decisions related to the therapeutic and caring process on behalf of and in accordance with the beliefs of the patient they represent and who is currently unable to express their will on their own. The paper was aimed at presenting the basic issues pertinent to the functioning of the health care agent's institution. pl
