dc.abstract.en Władysław Bartynowski (25 June 1832 – 16 December 1918) shared his father’s passion for collecting. He continued and nurtured it all his life, and even established his own “school,” although he had never held a high-ranking university office. His atelier provided education and practical knowledge to such eminent figures as Marian Gumowski and Feliks Kopera. He was known as a genuine “institution” in the city of Krakow, noted for his particular interest in books, numismatics, as well as collecting. Since he was a child, he had collected coins and medals, traded duplicates, acquired new specimens for his collections, and made galvanic copies with the use of his own technique of reproducing numismatic items, colloquially known as bartynotypia. The archives of the National Museum in Krakow house a number of various objects left by Władysław Bartynowski, among them the base material for his planned publications of a prospective dictionary of painters and engravers from ancient to contemporary times. This collection is composed primarily of extracts drawn from the sources. The index cards also contain the basic personal details such as names, dates of birth and death (most often including day/month/year). It is followed by information on the works of art. Overall, the scope of the data would depend on each artist’s status and the perceived value of their works. At times, some information concerning the authors or their works can also be found. Such additions and anecdotal notes make this never-before published work of Władysław Bartynowski even more interesting, while the contents attest to its great factual and academic value. pl
