Ancient Rugians in the light of ancient written sources and source literature : contribution to a discussion on archaeological records

Niniejszy artykuł ukazuje możliwości i problemy interpretacji źródeł archeologicznych wiązanych z tzw. grupą gustowską (której nazwa pochodzi od nekropoli odkrytej w miejscowości Gustow na Rugii) w świetle przekazów autorów rzymskich traktujących o starożytnych Rugiach oraz innych plemionach, które miały wówczas zamieszkiwać południowo-zachodnie wybrzeża Morza Bałtyckiego. Wspomniany fenomen archeologiczny definiuje się jako grupę kulturową, która ukształtowana została we wczesnym okresie wpływów rzymskich (I i II w. n.e.) w rejonie ujścia Odry oraz na terytorium pobliskich wysp, przy czym kluczowe znaczenie wydaje się mieć tutaj terytorium wyspy Rugii, gdzie zaobserwowano wyjątkowo liczne ślady osadnictwa. Obraz zróżnicowania etnicznego tej części Barbaricum wyłaniający się z przekazów antycznych (mimo podejmowanych na przestrzeni lat prób interpretacji, do których zaliczyć trzeba nie tylko dawne ustalenia badaczy niemieckich posługujących się tzw. metodą etniczną, ale także pewne kwestie podejmowane dziś przy użyciu narzędzi oferowanych przez historyków czy filologów klasycznych) jest fragmentaryczny i zdeformowany, na co składają się rozmaite czynniki, włączając w to specyficzną naturę źródła historycznego.

The article is an attempt to show main limitations, which become during the process of interpretation of archaeological records associated with so-called the Gustow group (named after the cemetery in Gustow on the Rügen island) in the light of Roman written sources about the ancient Rugians and other tribes, which have settled in the southwestern part of the Baltic coast. The Gustow group is an archaeological phenomenon, defined as a cultural group which has been shaped in the early Roman Period (I-II centuries AD) in the Lower Oder region and on near-by islands with a crucial role of the Rügen, where a numerous material traces of settlement is recorded. Ethnic diversity of this part of the Barbaricum, which is emerged from the ancient sources (although all former and current attempts to interpret them) is fragmentary and deformed in the result of different factors, including the specific nature of the historical source.
