New concept of revolution : Henri Lefebvre and the situationists in May 1968

This article focuses on Henri Lefebvre's direct and indirect influence on the student revolts of May 1968. His thought was an inspiration for the situationists and Daniel Cohn-Bendit, among others, who exploited and transformed his ideas., Coherent with the slogans spreading throughout the protests, Lefebvre's attitude brings them together in a critical discourse. His point of view allows to appreciate the political potential of the protests; it shows their aims which, going beyond the idea of a cultural revolution, focused on a holistic transformation of the world with the final goal of replacing the alienated, fragmented life with a fully lived one and allowing individuals to develop their potential. While various interpretations of students' protests express either a radically negative or positive reading, Lefebvre's perspective offers a complex explanation, which shows both the achievements of the students' movement and its deficiencies.
