Does citizenship have gender? : the cultural background of Jordanian mothers’ struggle for equality in citizenship

Pomimo iż debata o obywatelstwie w krajach Bliskiego Wschodu zatacza coraz szersze kręgi, większość teoretyków rzadko podejmuje kwestię płci. W analizach zmagań o obywatelstwo i roli płci w tej walce, nie lada wyzwaniem jest określenie i wyjaśnienie sposobu, w jaki obywatelstwo i płeć oddziałują na siebie w procesie konstruowania państwa, religii, jednostki i społeczności, bez popadania w stereotypy o regionie, jego krajach czy ludziach.

The Arab Spring has opened new channels for expressing political demands. Under the liberal surface covered by the international media, a number of political struggles of different citizens’ groups are hidden. Women are the main actors backstage. The important area of my research interest are Jordanian mothers struggling for equality in citizenship law. Motherhood is an inspiration for their political activity that challenges authoritarian government and exclusion politics. It has been an impulse to enter public areas otherwise reserved for men and transforms them. Citizenship has become an effective tool of political and social empowerment.
