Functions of intervisual references in audiovisual materials : on the example of Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks animations

Pojęcie interpiktoralności, zwane również interwizualnością lub interikonicznością, określa istnienie relacji zachodzących pomiędzy obrazami, bazując na ogólnych założeniach intertekstualności. Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na zjawisko interobrazowości, będące do tej pory obszarem pomijanym w analizach językoznawczych. Ponadto artykuł ma wskazać źródła czerpania nawiązań obrazowych w materiale audiowizualnym oraz ich funkcje z punktu widzenia widza. Jako materiał badawczy wybrano pięć filmów animowanych Disneya, Pixara i DreamWorks, które zbadano pod względem występowania nawiązań interobrazowych. Zidentyfikowane jednostki podzielono na pięć kategorii: nawiązania do scen, bezpośrednie przejęcie postaci, aluzje do postaci, nawiązania do nazw, symboli i innych elementów oraz Easter eggs. Następnie poddano je analizie ilościowej i jakościowej, co dało podstawę do sformułowania wniosków końcowych.

Intervisuality focuses on the relationship between pictures and is based mainly on the concept of intertextuality. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the phenomenon of intervisuality, which until now has been of scarce interests in linguistic theory. Furthermore, the author analyses the sources of intervisual references in audiovisual material and their functions from the viewers' point of view. The analysis is based on five animated films from the DreamWorks, Disney and Pixar productions. The author examined the animations in order to find intervisual references applied in the films. The identified elements were divided into five groups according to the art of intervisuality: references to scenes, direct references to characters, allusions to characters, references to proper names, symbols and other elements, as well as Easter eggs. Moreover, qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed in order to formulate the final conclusions.
