New fnds of moulds for casting coin flans at the Paphos agora
The Agora of Nea Paphos is located in the north-western part of the ancient city, east of Fanari hill and a few hundred metres north-east of the famous House of Dionysos. It was first excavated in the 1970s by Kyriakos Nicolaou, who confirmed the existence of a Roman agora at the location. The agora has been excavated by a team from the Institute of Archaeology at the Jagiellonian University since 2011, under the direction of Professor Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka. The Paphos Agora Project’s main research goal between 2011 and 2014 was to establish the location of a Greek agora from Hellenistic times, which predated the later Roman construction. Evidence that the Roman Agora did indeed lie upon remains of Hellenistic structures was finally obtained in 2014. Aside from the architectural remains mentioned above, the four seasons of excavation also uncovered a rich variety of different finds, which included three fragments of flan moulds. The aim of this paper is to publish these newly found moulds and to present a preliminary analysis of them alongside the archaeological contexts in which they were discovered.
