The influence of the quality of communication in the doctor - patient relationship on the course of the treatment process. On the example of patients with Lyme disease

W wyniku łączenia zainteresowania procesami komunikacji z socjologią medycyny powstał temat mojej pracy licencjackiej. Chcąc ocenić jakość komunikacji, wyznaczyłam trzy płaszczyzny: język, zaufanie między lekarzem a pacjentem oraz uwidaczniające się między nimi relacje władzy. Jak udowodniłam, to w obrębie tych płaszczyzn rozgrywa się proces porozumienia, który skutkuje powodzeniem lub porażką w leczeniu pacjenta. Balansując między funkcjonalizmem, interakcjonizmem symbolicznym oraz fenomenologią, starałam się z każdej z tych orientacji wybrać pojęcia, które najtrafniej opisują badane przeze mnie zjawisko. Do wywiadów indywidualnych zaprosiłam pacjentów z chorobą z Lyme, ponieważ uwidaczniają oni, jak ważna jest poprawna komunikacja. Borelioza pokazuje, jak trudności w definiowaniu choroby mogą wpłynąć na leczenie pacjenta, jak jednostka przyjmuje fakt bycia chorą, a także jak inni reagują na ten fakt. Badając relacje, chciałam poznać obydwie perspektywy, dlatego wywiady przeprowadziłam także z lekarzami. Praca ta dowodzi, że porozumiewanie się lekarza i pacjenta jest bardzo ważne. Potwierdza także, mimo zastrzeżeń etycznych, że socjologowie mogą poruszać kwestie związane z chorobą.

The subject of my bachelor’s thesis arose as a result of connecting my interests communication processes and in sociology of medicine. In order to evaluate the quality of communication between the patient and the physician, I have defined three aspects: language, trust between aformentioned parties and their power relations. As I have proved, all of these aspects take important part in the process of understanding patient’s condition both by the physician and the patient himself, which then results in either success or failure of the treatment. Balancing between functionalism, symbolic interactionism and phenomenology, I have tried to pick concepts of those theories which best describe the phenomenon which I investigate.I invited patients suffering from Lyme disease for personal interviews as their cases clearly show how crucial correct communication is. Lyme disease exposes how difficulties in defining the disease may affect treatment of the patient, as well as how the patient and their environment accept learning about their condition. I conducted the interviews also with the doctors in order to see the points of view of both sides.My thesis confirms that communication between the patient and their doctor is essential to the outcome of the treatment. It also shows that sociologists, despite some ethical concerns, may address issues related to diseases.
