Investigating the black box of a translator on the basis of own translation of the short story "Phoenix" by Chuck Palahniuk

Niniejsza praca przedstawia analizę procesu decyzyjnego tłumacza w ujęciu psycholingwistycznym i koncentruje się wokół osoby tłumacza oraz strategicznej fazy tłumaczenia. Korpus stanowi własny przekład opowiadania z języka angielskiego na polski. Głównym celem pracy jest zgłębienie „czarnej skrzynki” tłumacza, tzn. zbadanie procesów myślowych zachodzących w trakcie wykonywania zadania tłumaczeniowego. Innymi problemami badawczymi są: wpływ strategii na proces przekładu oraz zmiana perspektywy do własnego tłumaczenia po upływie czasu. Badanie powyższych problemów opiera się na porównaniu analizy retrospektywnej z procesualną, stanowiącą trzon niniejszej pracy. Główna analiza oparta jest na protokołach werbalnych oraz prowadzonym w trakcie procesu dzienniku tłumaczeniowym. Natomiast analiza retrospektywna stanowi ogólny komentarz do tłumaczenia wykonywanego kilka miesięcy wcześniej, a także zawiera omówienie różnic w punkcie widzenia oraz ważniejszych zmian dokonanych w trakcie ponownej korekty. Punktem wyjścia jest omówienie pojęć takich jak strategia, procedura i problem tłumaczeniowy, a także przedstawienie koncepcji tłumaczenia strategicznego i protokołów głośnego myślenia. Nacisk położono na rozgraniczenie strategii od procedury oraz zdefiniowanie pojęcia problemu tłumaczeniowego. Niniejsza praca dowodzi, że ustalanie strategii przed tłumaczeniem właściwym znacząco wpływa na proces przekładu, potwierdza wyższość protokołów werbalnych nad retrospekcją w badaniu procesu decyzyjnego tłumacza, a także zapewnia wgląd w strategiczną fazę tłumaczenia.

The present thesis shows the analysis of translator’s decision-making process from psycholinguistic point of view and focuses on the translator and strategic behavior in the process. The corpus of data is own translation of a short story from English into Polish. The main aim of the study is to investigate the translator’s black box, i.e. to examine their mental processes while carrying out a translation task. Secondary research questions are: the impact of translation strategy on the process and the shift of perspective towards own translation after certain period of time. The investigation of the issues in question is based on comparison of a retrospective analysis with a processual one which is the main part of this study. The processual analysis is an introspection obtained by application of think-aloud protocols and concurrent written self-reports, whereas the retrospective analysis consists of a general commentary on the translation made several months before and discusses certain shifts in perspective, as well as significant changes made during re-evaluation process. The starting point for empirical part of the study is to discuss the notion of strategy, procedure and translation problem, as well as to present the concept of strategic translation and think-aloud protocols. The theoretical outline focuses on a clear-cut separation between strategy and procedure, and it aims at defining the notion of translation problem. The present study shows that strategy has an enormous influence on performing the translation task, proves that verbal reports are far more useful in decision-making process research than retrospection, and it also provides and insight into the strategic phase of translation process.
