The Fantastic Narration in The Venus of Ille by Prosper Mérimée (1837)

W mojej pracy licencjackiej podejmuję próbę analizy noweli fantastycznej zatytułowanej Wenus z Ille autorstwa Prospera Mériméego, opublikowanej w 1837 r. W pierwszej części skupiam się na toposie ożywionego posągu, wokół którego zbudowana jest fabuła utworu. Zadaję sobie również pytanie, skąd Mérimée czerpał inspirację do napisania tej noweli i czy pełniona przez niego funkcja generalnego inspektora zabytków miała wpływ na jego twórczość. Następnie koncentruję się na elementach narracji fantastycznej charakterystycznych dla tego gatunku. Opisuję sposób, w jaki autor buduje napięcie oraz atmosferę niepokoju i dziwności. Czytelnik i narrator zostają postawieni przed dylematem: muszą szukać logicznego wyjaśnienia wydarzeń lub przyznać, że istnieją zjawiska niewytłumaczalne. W dalszej części pracy podejmuję próbę interpretacji symboli i motywów fantastycznych wykorzystanych przez Mériméego. W zakończeniu dochodzę do wniosku, że Wenus z Ille jest modelowym przykładem noweli fantastycznej.

In my bachelor thesis I attempt to analyze The Venus of Ille, fantastic short story written by Prosper Mérimée and published in 1837. In the first part, I make a presentation of the topos of the animated statue, around which the plot of the writing is built. I also discuss where his inspiration came from and how far the position of inspector-general of historical monuments influenced his work. Then I concentrate on the elements of fantastic narration, typical for this genre. I describe in what way the author builds tension and the atmosphere of anxiety and strangeness. The reader and narrator are facing the dilemma: should they look for a consistent explanation of the events or own that there are incomprehensible phenomena. In the further part, I attempt to interpret the symbols and motives used by Mérimée, which emphasize the ambiguity of his composition. In the end, I conclude that The Venus of Ille is a model example of a fantastic short story.

Dans mon mémoire de licence je tente d’analyser La Vénus d’Ille, nouvelle fantastique écrite par Prosper Mérimée et publiée en 1837. Dans le premier chapitre, j’aborde le topos de la statue animée car celui-ci est le motif central du récit. Je me penche aussi sur deux questions : d’où viennent les inspirations de l’auteur et en quelle mesure la fonction d’inspecteur général des monuments historiques a-t-elle influencé Mérimée-écrivain ? Ensuite, je présente les éléments de la narration fantastique caractéristiques pour ce genre. Je décris comment l’auteur crée la tension dramatique et l’atmosphère d’inquiétude et d’étrangeté. Le lecteur et le narrateur se trouvent face à un dilemme : chercher une explication logique des évènements ou admettre l’existence des phénomènes inexplicables. Ultérieurement, j’interprète les symboles et les motifs fantastiques utilisés par Mérimée. Dans la conclusion je constate que La Vénus d’Ille est un exemple parfait de la nouvelle fantastique.
