What is pain? Empirical-philosophical study

Przedmiotem pracy jest ból, a głównie język stosowany do jego opisu. Celem pracy jest zbadanie, czy możliwe jest utrzymanie hipotezy, że ból jest percepcją. Praca ma charakter interdyscyplinarny, należy do dziedziny kognitywistyki i korzysta z wyników badań oraz metod z zakresu psychologii, neuroanatomii funkcjonalnej i filozofii. W pracy przeprowadzono empiryczny opis i analizę semantyczną reprezentacji językowych dotyczących bólu. Empiryczna część pracy oparta jest na badaniach wykorzystujących jakościową metodologię analizy narracji dotyczących bólu, natomiast w jej części filozoficznej korzysta się z metod fenomenologii lingwistycznej i metafizyki opisowej. Rozdział pierwszy służy zaprezentowaniu danych empirycznych oraz wstępnej ocenie ich wartości filozoficznej. Rozdział drugi dotyczy semantycznej charakterystyki reprezentacji językowych bólu, szczególnie problemu ich znaczenia i odniesienia oraz elementów badania ontologicznej struktury doświadczenia bólowego, w kontekście dyskusji o percepcyjnej naturze bólu.

The subject of the thesis is pain and, mainly, language of pain description. The aim of the thesis is to decide whether the perceptual hypothesis about nature of pain is justifiable. Cognitive science is the discipline of the thesis – it has an interdisciplinary character and consists of methodology and knowledge from the scope of psychology, functional neuroanatomy and philosophy. The empirical description and semantic analysis on language representation of pain were done. The empirical part is based on qualitative analysis of pain narratives. In its philosophical part linguistic phenomenology and descriptive metaphysics are used as a method of inquiry. In the first chapter empirical data and the initial evaluation of their philosophical importance are presented. The second chapter relates to the semantic characteristic of language representation of pain, especially to the issue of meaning and reference, as well as elements of ontological structure of pain are also investigated - on the ground of discussion on perceptual nature of pain.
