The fall and rebirth: Norse Ragnarök in popular culture at the turn of the 20th and 21st century

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest analizie motywu Ragnaröku, końca świata w mitologii nordyckiej, w wybranych tekstach kultury popularnej w odniesieniu do Eddy Poetyckiej. To właśnie ona jest oryginalnym źródłem, w którym motyw ten pojawia się po raz pierwszy i to z niej czerpią dzisiejsi twórcy. W rozprawie została wykorzystana metoda strukturalna przy użyciu pojęcia funkcji sformułowanego przez Władimira Proppa i rozwiniętego przez Rolanda Barthesa. Istotnym elementem badania jest zastosowanie teorii Mircei Eliadego, antropologa i historyka kultury, na temat rytuałów przejścia. Kolejnymi aspektami, które zostały poddane analizie są: charakter zabiegów adaptacyjnych wykorzystywanych przez artystów, atrakcyjność tematu nordyckiego końca świata zarówno wśród odbiorców jak i twórców oraz aktualność skandynawskich mitów.

This dissertation concentrates around the analysis of Ragnarök motif, the end of the world in Norse mythology, in selected popular culture texts in relation to the Poetic Edda. It is the original source, in which this motif appears for the first time and today’s authors relate to it in theirs stories.In the dissertation the structural method was used, with application of the term “function” formulated by Vladimir Propp and developed by Roland Barthes. An important element of the research is the application of the theory of Mircea Eliade, an anthropologist and cultural historian, to the rituals of passage. Other aspects that were analyzed are: the nature of adaptation techniques used by artists; the attractiveness of the theme of the Nordic end of the world, both among recipients and creators; and the timeliness validity of Scandinavian myths.
