The Master’s thesis “Portrait of Ireneusz Kania – translator in 20 languages” fits within “the cultural turn” in Translation Studies. Usually omitted and underappreciated, the translators start to step out of the shadow of the author and the original text, they are no longer invisible and gain recognition of TS scholars, becoming the object of their research. They are seen as an important factor in circulation of literatures and intercultural transfer, while the knowledge of them – as essential in understanding and interpreting translated texts. The method of the portrait constitutes an efficient tool in showing the scope of translators’ activities. A portrait aims at gathering the information about the translator, his education, command of languages, way of entering the profession, methods of work. Every detail of his life can be significant in discovering his values and aspirations. Our portrait, based mainly on interviews and conversations, presents the figure of translator Ireneusz Kania. From the description of the person, acquisition of languages and the beginnings in translating, via his way of working and translated books, up to the received awards and considerations on translation, language and literature, the portrait shows the multicultural dimension of his activities and versatility of his interests. A bibliographic database of all Kania’s works complements the thesis, it contains his translations as well as prefaces, afterwords, reviews, articles, poems.

Le mémoire de maîtrise « Portrait d’Ireneusz Kania – traducteur dans une vingtaine de langues » s’inscrit dans le « tournant culturel » en traductologie. Chaque détail peut amener à connaître ses aspirations et valeurs. Notre portrait, fondé sur des entretiens et des interviews, présente la figure de traducteur Ireneusz Kania. Dès la description de sa personne, de l’acquisition de langues et ses débuts dans la traduction, par sa façon de travailler, les œuvres traduites, aux prix et aux réflexions sur la traduction, les lettres et les langues, le portrait montre la dimension multiculturelle de ses activités et la polyvalence de ses intérêts. Une base bibliographique de l’œuvre de Kania complète le mémoire, elle comprend toutes ses traductions, préfaces, postfaces, critiques, articles, poèmes.
