Infoterm – the role and responsibilities in the society of information and knowledge

This paper describes the main projects with have been carried out by Infoterm and cooperating organizations. The author discusses the historical background of this institution and its policy of terminology. Infoterm promotes and supports cooperation and creation of new terminology centers and networks. Its overall objective is to improve communication expertise, knowledge transfer and deliver content in order to facilitate the participation of all people in the global knowledge society. Infoterm activities cover the following areas: the Internet as the transport medium of civic and public information, public access to information, education. The results of the survey on the knowledge of the issues related to the information society and the International Information Centre for Terminology are presented. Among fifth-year students of Information and Library Science, Jagiellonian University conducted a survey on the knowledge of Infoterm and basic concepts related to this. Survey results indicated that the state of knowledge of respondents is lower than expected.

Infoterm promuje i wspiera współpracę istniejących i tworzenie nowych ośrodków terminologii i sieci z ogólnym celem poprawy komunikacji specjalistycznej, transferu wiedzy i dostarczania zawartości w celu ułatwienia uczestnictwa wszystkich w globalnym wielojęzycznym społeczeństwie wiedzy. Infoterm swoją działalnością wspiera główne drogi rozwoju społeczeństwa informacyjnego. Zaliczyć do nich należy: Internet jako środek komunikacji obywatelskiej i informacji publicznej, powszechny dostęp do informacji, edukacja. Praca ta przedstawia najważniejsze projekty w tym przedmiocie realizowane przez Infoterm oraz współpracujące organizacje. Omówiono również rys historyczny tej instytucji. Wśród studentów V roku Informacji Naukowej i Bibliotekoznawstwa Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego przeprowadzono badania ankietowe dotyczące znajomości działalności Infoterm oraz podstawowych pojęć z tym związanych. Wyniki ankiety wskazały, iż stan wiedzy respondentów jest niższy od oczekiwanego.
