W drodze Jacka Kerouaca jako romans poszukiwań

Celem tej pracy jest zanalizowanie powieści Jacka Kerouaca W Drodze jako romansu poszukiwań. Jako punkt odniesienia do analizy wybrałam definicję questu Audena, na którą składają się: obiekt poszukiwań, droga, która do niego prowadzi, bohater, próba bohatera, strażnicy obiektu oraz pomocnicy. Następnie prześledziłam jak każdy z tych elementów wygląda w powieści Kerouaca. Poszukiwanie odbywa się w dwóch wymiarach. W wymiarze realnym jest to spontaniczna podróż bez map i bez konkretnego celu. Drugi wymiar to wymiar duchowy, w którym obiektem poszukiwań obu bohaterów jest kwintesencja życia. Sam Sal, natomiast, który jest zmęczony swoim dotychczasowym życiem oraz zdominowanym przez konsumpcję amerykańskim społeczeństwem, wyrusza w podróż w celu odnalezienia samego siebie, nowych, alternatywnych wartości oraz nadania sensu swojemu życiu. Jego pierwotne wyobrażenia o przyjaźni, wolności, mitycznym zachodzie i amerykańskim śnie zostają wystawione na próbę. Sal różni się od średniowiecznych poszukiwaczy tym, że nie posiada wyjątkowych cech, jest niedoskonały. Doświadczenia, które przeżywa bedąc w drodze czynią go mądrzejszym i pozwalają zrozumieć samego siebie, zakceptować rzeczywistość oraz swoje w niej miejsce. Pod tym względem przypomina on bardzo swoich średniowiecznych poprzedników. Podobnie, jak w romansie poszukiwań, droga okazuje się być wartością samą w sobie, gdyż wzogaca bohaterów o nowa perspektywę widzenia siebie i świata.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse Jack Kerouac's On the Road as a quest romance. In order to do that I have chosen Auden's six element definition of a quest, which includes an object to be found, a long journey to find it, a hero, a test, the guardians and the helpers, and I have applied it to On the Road. In Kerouac's novel the journey has no physical destination and therefore there is no object to be found. However, the two main characters are on a quest of spiritual nature and on the spiritual level they both search for the essence of life which they call “IT”. At the same time the main character Sal, who is tired of his life and of American society dominated by consumerism, is on a journey to find new alternative values, to find himself and a new meaning of life. His initial beliefs about friendship, freedom, the West and American dream get tested while he advances on his way to enlightenment. Sal is different from medieval questers, as he is flawed and has no special qualities that Auden mentions. His experience makes him wiser and helps him grow and come to terms with himself and reality and in this respect he resembles medieval questers. Similarly to the quest romance, the road turns out to be a value in itself, as it provides experience and self-knowledge.
