"The mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley : an alternative vision of the Arthurian myth and a Neopagan “księga zbójecka”

"Mgły Avalonu" Marion Zimmer Bradley zajmują wyjątkowe miejsce pośród dzieł nawiązujących do mitologii arturiańskiej. W niniejszym artykule proponuję dwie interpretacje tej powieści: jako alternatywną wizję mitu arturiańskiego i neopogańską księgę zbójecką. Alternatywność "Mgieł..." opiera się na perspektywie kobiecej (czytelnik poznaje losy Artura oczami m.in Morgiany i Ginewry) i nowatorskich wątkach (konflikt wyznawców Potrójnej Bogini oraz chrześcijaństwa). Drugi istotny aspekt badań nad "Mgłami Avalonu" to oddziaływanie powieści na duchowość czytelników: Bradley czerpała inspirację ze źródeł ważnych dla współczesnego pogaństwa, a jej dzieło stało się z kolei Mickiewiczowską księgą zbójecką dla wielu neopogan.

"The Mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley is considered to be one of the most special versions of the Arthurian myth. This article focuses on two ways of interpreting Bradley’s novel: as an alternative vision of the classical version (here understood as Malory’s Le Morte D’Artur and its adaptations) and as the księga zbójecka (lit. “thief book”), a work which inspires and shapes reader’s personality. Firstly, the origin of the Arthurian myth and its variations are discussed. What follows is the justification of "The Mists" being an alternative version (two arguments are presented: the female perspective and innovative religious theme). The article concludes with an analysis of "The Mists" as a novel highly significant to a Neopagan (especially Wiccan) millieu, as many of the readers were drawn to contemporary Paganism after reading Bradley’s work.
