Kadm jest pierwiastkiem należącym do metali ciężkich. Podstawowym źródłem tego pierwiastka jest przemysł. Wpływa on negatywnie na organizm ssaków. Pobierany jest głównie drogą pokarmową i oddechową. W większości akumuluje się w wątrobie i nerkach. W organizmie ssaków wchodzi w interakcje z pierwiastkami fizjologicznymi tj. cynkiem, miedzią, wapniem, selenem i żelazem. Zazwyczaj działa jako antagonista wypierający niezbędne pierwiastki z organizmu. Ponadto kadm wykazuje działanie terato- i kancerogenne u płodu oraz powoduje głównie wady głowy i kończyn. W dymie papierosowym znajduje się ok. 1 μg Cd, co powoduje jego akumulację oraz negatywne działanie w organizmie człowieka.

Cadmium is an element belonging to the heavy metals group. The primary source of this element is the industry. It influences negatively on the body of mammals. The absorption of this metal in mostly by oral way or by inhalation. Cadmium accumulates mostly in the liver and kidneys. In the mammalian body it interacts with the physiological elements such as zinc, copper, calcium, selenium and iron. Usually acts as an antagonist, displacing essential elements from the body. Moreover, cadmium has been shown to be terato- and carcinogens. In most cases it leads to defects in the head and limbs of the fetus. The cigarette smoke contains about 1 μg of Cd, which causes the accumulation and negatives effects in the body of human.
