Adapting an adaptation – on socio-psychological aspects of translation. The case of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Celem pracy jest analiza sowieckiej wersji The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Lymana Franka Bauma - Волшебник Изумрудного города (“Czarodziej Szmaragdowego miasta”). Wersja Wołkowa nosi wiele znamion adaptacji: dodano dwa rozdziały, niektórzy bohaterowie mają w porównaniu z oryginałem inne cechy. W książce jest również wiele elementów, które upodabniają opowieść do tradycyjnych podań ludowych. Wołkow musiał także przestrzegać sztywnych norm literackich, które były zupełnie inne od amerykańskich, ponieważ w ZSRS literaturę uważano za narzędzie, które mogło posłużyć do formowania nowego społeczeństwa. W 1991 Peter Blystone opublikował The Wizard of the Emerald City – jedyne jak dotąd tłumaczenie wersji Wołkowa na język angielski. Tłumaczenie Blystone’a zostaje porównane z utworem Wołkowa i oryginałem Bauma. Praca jest więc próbą analizy socjologiczno-kulturowych aspektów przekładu. W rozdziale pierwszym omawiane są biografie trzech pisarzy, aby uważnie przyjrzeć się stylowi każdego z nich. Rozdział drugi stanowi szczegółowy przegląd historii przekładu w Związku Sowieckim, zwłaszcza w kontekście dydaktyzmu i promowania pewnych wartości. Przywołane zostają również koncepcje wybranych tłumaczy sowieckich. Rozdział trzeci skupia się na omówieniu zachodniej translatoryki oraz znaczenia zwrotu kulturowego w badaniach nad przekładem. Rozdział ten służy również podkreśleniu różnic pomiędzy sowieckimi i współczesnymi tłumaczami. Szczególna uwaga poświęcona jest teoriom André Lefevere’a i Gideona Toury’ego. Rozdział czwarty poświęcony jest analizie materiału empirycznego. Należy zauważyć, że omówione zostają nie tylko elementy leksykalne. Analizie poddano również parateksty oraz psychologiczne aspekty przekładu.

The aim of the thesis is analyze the Soviet rendition of Lyman Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - Alexander Volkov’s Волшебник Изумрудного города (The Wizard of the Emerald City). Volkov’s version has numerous traits of an adaptation: two chapters are added, some characters are given unique features, and there are numerous elements which make the story similar to traditional folktales. Furthermore, Volkov had to obey the strict Soviet literary norms which were vastly different from the American ones, as for the Soviets literature was considered a tool that could shape the new society. In 1991, Peter Blystone published The Wizard of the Emerald City, the only English translation of Volkov’s rendition. This version is compared with Volkov’s rendition and Baum’s original. Thus the thesis is an attempt at analyzing socio-cultural aspects of translation.Chapter 1 discusses the biographies of the three writers in order to properly investigate their styles. Chapter 2 brings a detailed overview of the history of translation in the Soviet Union – its importance in terms of didacticism and promoting certain values are discussed. Also, the conceptions of selected Soviets translators are discussed. In turn, Chapter 3 is concentrated on the Western ideas and the significance of the cultural turn in Translation Studies. This chapter highlights the differences in the line of thinking between the Soviets and contemporary translators. In particular, the theories of André Lefevere and Gideon Toury. Chapter 4 is devoted to empirical analysis. It is worth noting that not only lexical elements are analyzed. A special attention is drawn to paratexts and psychological aspects of translation.
