Challenges in Translation of Children´s Literature: Elvira Lindo´s Mateuszek

Niniejsza praca omawia wyzwania, jakie stawia przed tłumaczem literatura dziecięca. Na początku autorka charakteryzuje tę literaturę, przedstawiając czynniki, które składają się na jej wyjątkowy kształt. Następnie skupia swoją uwagę na przekraczaniu tabu i funkcjach jakie pełni to zjawisko w książkach dla dzieci oraz konsekwencjach, jakie może za sobą nieść. Opisuje także rozwiązania możliwe do zastosowania przez tłumacza, który podejmuje się przekładu dzieł naruszających tabu. Na podstawie prac innych badaczy i własnych obserwacji, autorka wysuwa propozycję klasyfikacji tabu w literaturze dziecięcej, która ma na celu uwypuklenie szerszego pojęcia tego zjawiska w odniesieniu do książek dla dzieci niż dla dorosłych. Analizie zostaje poddane także przeniesienie kontekstu społecznego w tłumaczonej literaturze dziecięcej. W części badawczej pracy omówione zostają tłumaczenia dwóch książek hiszpańskiej autorki Elviry Lindo, "Mateuszek" i "Sekret Mateuszka", których przekładu na język polski dokonała Anna Trznadel-Szczepanek. Głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest ukazanie, jak złożona jest literatura dziecięca i jak wymagające jest jej tłumaczenie, po to, aby przeciwstawić się niesprawiedliwej ocenie jaką posiada pośród innych gatunków literackich i niedocenianiu jej twórców.

This paper discusses the challenges which may be affronted by the translator while dealing with the children’s literature. First, the author presents the principal factors that contribute to the special character of this kind of literature, and then she focuses on the taboo infringement, its functions and consequences. She also analyses the possible solutions that may be used by the translator in case of translating books for children which infringe the taboo. On the basis of another investigators’ work and her own considerations, the author suggests a model of classification of taboo in children’s literature, which tends to demonstrate the wider conception of this phenomenon than in case of books written for adults. Moreover, the transmission of the social context in translated children´s literature is analysed. In the theoretical framework of the paper the author examines two Polish translations of the books originally written by the Spanish writer Elvira Lindo: "Mateuszek" and "Sekret Mateuszka". The translations were carried out by Anna Trznadel-Szczepanek. The main aim of this work is to prove that not only the children’s literature is a very complex production, but also its translation requires a higher level of competences from the translator, so there should be a change in the perception of such literature and its creators by the public which, as for now, keeps underestimating it.

El presente trabajo analiza los desafíos a los que se enfrenta el traductor en la traducción de la literatura infantil. La autora, tras presentar los factores que contribuyen a la peculiaridad de este género, centra su atención en la cuestión de la transgresión del tabú, sus funciones y consecuencias, y las posibles soluciones que pueden aplicarse en su traducción. A base de los estudios de otros investigadores y reflexiones propias se hace un intento de crear una clasificación del tabú en la LI, con el fin de demostrar que es un área que aborda más elementos que el tabú presente en la literatura adulta. Se examina también la transmisión del contexto social en la literatura infantil traducida. El análisis se efectúa sobre dos traducciones polacas de la creación de la escritora española Elvira Lindo realizadas por Anna Trznadel-Szczepanek: "Mateuszek" y "Sekret Mateuszka". El objetivo principal del estudio es presentar la complejidad de la literatura infantil y su traducción, con el fin de luchar contra la subestimación injusta de este ramo del arte y de sus creadores.
