From the Death of Arthur to the Fall of Arthur: about the reecriture of Arthurian myth

Tematem mojej pracy jest upadek i śmierć króla Artura, przedstawione w dwóch dziełach: La Mort du roi Arthur (Śmierć króla Artura wpisująca się w cykl Lancelota-Graala) oraz La Chute d’Arthur (Upadek króla Artura) pióra J.R.R.Tolkiena. Oba teksty pochodzą odpowiednio z XIII i XX wieku. Zależało mi na zbadaniu, jak bardzo różnią się dwie wersje tych samych wydarzeń napisanych w odstępie około siedmiuset lat. Zamysłem moim była analiza przedstawionych w dziełach wydarzeń oraz bohaterów i ich losów. Dzieła opowiadaja o tych samych wydarzeniach, czyli o kresie rządów słynnego króla Artura. Skupiłam się tym samym na tej mniej chwalebnej części mitu arturiańskiego, bo opowiadającej o upadających wartościach Artura i rycerzy Okrągłego Stołu, a także o przyjaźni zamieniającej się w nienawiść i w końcu o wielkiej zdradzie, która doprowadza do upadku króla Artura. La Mort du roi Arthur z najwyższą dokładnością opisuje wydarzenia i ich konsekwencje dla losów bohaterów, z kolei La Chute d’Arthur to zaledwie trzydziestostronicowy poemat, który nie zagłębiając się w mocno w szczegóły, ukazuje najważniejsze ostatnie batalie króla. Co ciekawe, podczas analizy obu utworów, odkryłam interesującą różnicę w sposobie przedstawienia bohaterów. Podczas gdy utwór z cyklu Lancelot-Graal skupia się na stopniowej degradacji wartości wyznawanych przez Arthura, Tolkien ukazuje króla jako władcę bardziej idealnego.

The object of my thesis is the fall and the death of king Arthur, presented in the following works: La Mort du roi Arthur (the cycle of Lancelot-Graal) and La Chute d’Arthur (The Fall of Arthur) written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Both texts come from two different centuries: the XIII and the XX. What I cared about was to observe how likely could be the presentation of the same events while written in the difference of seven thousand years. The purpose of this thesis was to do the perspicacious analyse of the events and heros presented in two following works. Those two texts relate the same events which lead to the fall of celebrated king Arthur. I focused here on this dark side of the mythe of king Arthur, which narrate about the fall of values for the king and the Round Table and also about the friendship which tourned to be hatred, finally about the betrayal which destroys the arthurian world forever. While La Mort du roi Arthur is a novel which narrates with the big diligence the events and the consequences of the acting of heroes, the Fall of Arthur is a short poem written in about thirty pages and relates only the most important battles of Arthur. During the analyse of those two works, I discovered an interesting thing about the way of presenting the main heroes. La Mort du roi Arthur is focussing on the eroding degradation of arthurians values and The Fall of Arthur shows the king as a great and powerful master.

Le sujet de mon travail est le motif de la chute et de la mort du roi Arthur présenté dans deux œuvres arthuriennes : le texte anonyme du XIIIe s. – la Mort du roi Arthur (le cycle de Lancelot-Graal) et la Chute d’Arthur (The Fall of Arthur) écrite par J.R.R. Tolkien au XXe s. Les deux textes proviennent des époques différentes et le but de mon travail est d’examiner quel est le degré de la différence entre les deux œuvres écrites dans l’espace d’environ sept cents ans. Mon intention était d’analyser la présentation des événements et du comportement des héros à la façon la plus approfondie. Les deux récits se réfèrent aux mêmes événements qui marquent la fin du règne du fameux roi Arthur. Je me suis concentrée alors sur la partie du mythe arthurien moins glorieuse, alors celle qui raconte la dégradation des valeurs arthuriennes et l’amitié qui se transforme en haine et finalement, puis celle qui parle de la trahison qui conduira à la fin arthurienne. Tandis que la Mort du roi Arthur est un roman qui relate avec une grande exactitude les dernières aventures et ses conséquences pour le destin des héros, la Chute d’Arthur est un poème qui compte environ trente pages et montre les batailles décisives du roi Arthur. En poursuivant mes recherches, j’ai découvert une différence intéressante dans la façon présenter les protagonistes. Le récit du cycle Lancelot-Graal se concentre sur la dégradation progressive des valeurs du roi Arthur et de son entourage, mais le poème de Tolkien dévoile une image du roi toujours puissant et plus idéalisé.
