ANALIZA NORM PRZEKŁADOWYCH W DWÓCH POLSKICH TŁUMACZENIACH POWIEŚCI J. K. ROWLING HARRY POTTER I INSYGNIA ŚMIERCI

Praca ma na celu omówienie niektórych technik stosowanych przez Andrzeja Polkowskiego oraz grupę tłumaczy-fanów w przekładzie siódmej części serii Harry Potter autorstwa J.K. Rowling. W tym celu wybrano pięć przykładowych rozdziałów książki i wraz z tłumaczeniami poddano je porównawczemu badaniu ilościowemu i jakościowemu, opartemu na modelu analizy strategii tłumaczeniowych opracowanym przez Andrew Chestermana. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia historię amatorskich tłumaczeń Harry'ego Pottera oraz definiuje tłumaczenie profesjonalne i amatorskie. Rozdział drugi przybliża czytelnikom pojęcie norm w przekładzie oraz model opracowany przez Chestermana. Rozdział trzeci określa zakres analizy oraz wyjaśnia czym jest jednostka tłumaczeniowa (unit of translation). Analizę wyników rozpoczyna przedstawienie strategii stosowanych przez tłumaczy w ujęciu ilościowym, mającym na celu wyodrębnienie tych najczęściej występujących. Następny etap skupia się na przykładach wybranych strategii oraz omówieniu podjętych przez tłumaczy decyzji, co w przeciwieństwie do analizy ilościowej pokazuje różnice między tłumaczeniem oficjalnym a amatorskim. Różnice w strategiach wynikają z kierowania się przez tłumaczy innymi normami: Polkowski kieruje swoje tłumaczenie zarówno do czytelników jak i instytucji (wydawnictwo), zaś zadaniem fanów jest stworzenie w jak najkrótszym czasie poprawnego tłumaczenia, którego odbiorcami będą inni fani, czytelnicy serii książek o Harrym Potterze.

The thesis aims to discuss some of the techniques used by Andrzej Polkowski and by a group of fan translators in their renditions of the seventh part of the Harry Potter series written by J.K. Rowling. For this purpose, five chapters of the book have been chosen as samples and both translations have been quantitatively and qualitatively analysed, using Chesterman's Translation Strategy Framework. Chapter One presents the history of amateur translations of Harry Potter and defines the concept of professional and amateur translation. Chapter Two describes the theory of norms in translation and the model devised by Chesterman. Chapter Three determines the scope of the analysis and explains what the unit of translation is. The analysis of the results begins with the quantitative presentation of strategies used by the translators whose aim is to identify those most commonly used. Then the chapter focuses on examples of selected strategies and the decisions made by the translators are discussed, which shows the differences between the official and the amateur translations and was not visible in the quantitative analysis. The differences in strategies stem from the fact that the translators conform to different norms: Polkowski's translation is directed at the readers but also at institutions (the publishing house), and the fans' task is to create as soon as possible a correct translation, whose recipients are other fans, the readership of Harry Potter series.
