Ludzka seksualność w powieściach „Świat według Garpa” i „Hotel New Hampshire” autorstwa Johna Irvinga

Tematyka pracy magisterskiej dotyczy dwóch powieści autorstwa John Irvinga, mianowicie „Świat według Garpa” i „Hotel New Hampshire”. Celem pracy było zbadanie, w jaki sposób ludzka seksualność została przedstawiona przez autora w tych dwóch powieściach. Praca miała również na celu prześledzenie, w jaki sposób autor uporał się z problemem rewolucji seksualnej w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki i zmianami, które zaszły w podejściu do sfery seksualnej w latach 60-tych ubiegłego stulecia i później. Zostało to zrobione między innymi w oparciu o badania przeprowadzone na rozmaitych grupach Amerykanów. Wnioskiem wyraźnie nasuwającym się po zbadaniu tematyki powieści Johna Irvinga był wniosek, że autor nie pozostał obojętny na zmiany, które miały miejsce w społeczeństwie amerykańskim. John Irving na przykład pochwala ujawnienie się transseksualistów i wyraża współczucie dla ich położenia i braku zrozumienia przez współobywateli. Z drugiej strony pisarz wyraźnie opowiada się przeciwko bezmyślnemu wyzwoleniu kobiet i popełnianiu cudzołóstwa, które może prowadzić do rozpadu struktur rodzinnych.

The purpose of this study was to investigate human sexuality as presented in two novels by John Irving, namely The World According to Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire. Another aim was to find out how various aspects of human sexuality depicted in the novels corresponded with the moral changes that occurred in the mentality of the American society during and after the sexual revolution of the 1960s. John Irving’s novels were examined from the sociological point of view. The principal conclusion was that John Irving is a moralist much concerned with the behaviour of the Americans, especially their sexual behaviour. The author is deeply dissatisfied with the relaxation of the sexual norms leading to the disintegration of family life. However, it was discovered that the novelist is full of compassion and understanding for the people who might have problems with their gender, as well as their sexual preferences.
