Julia Domna and her circle of sophists

Tematem pracy jest aktywność intelektualna i patronacka Julii Domny oraz działalność jej tzw. kręgu. Fenomen ten został przeanalizowany na podstawie dostępnych źródeł pisanych, epigraficznych oraz dzieł sztuki, na tle kulturowym epoki (drugiej sofistyki) oraz w świetle ewentualnych motywacji politycznych i propagandowych, które stały za jego powstaniem. Na tej podstawie została wysnuta hipoteza mówiąca, iż aspiracje intelektualne cesarzowej oraz powołanie kręgu miały miejsce w wyniku przemyślanej kreacji Julii Domny nawiązującej do postaci Kornelii (matki Grakchów) oraz odwołania się do etosu człowieka wykształconego (pepaideumenos), niezmiernie żywotnego wśród elity rzymskiej i szczególnie popularnego w dobie drugiej sofistyki. W pracy zostały poruszone również kwestie dotyczące funkcjonowania kręgu, takie jak jego formuła, organizacja, skład i późniejsza recepcja.

The main theme of the thesis is Julia Domna's activity on the field of patronage and education and the existence of her so-called circle. This phenomenon was examined in the light of the sources (the written one, inscriptions and the pieces of art). Attention was also taken on the cultural background of the era, and - what is more - on the political and propaganda motifs that caused the invention of the circle. On this basis the following hypothesis was made: the intellectual and patronage aspirations of Julia Domna served the dynastic propaganda of Septiumius Severus by creating his wife so to seem Cornelia-like and by invocation to the elite's ethos of a man of culture and education - pepaideumenos. In the thesis appear also another problems connected with the circle, such as its formula, organisation, composition and following reception.
