Deaf people - cultural and linguistic minority or disabled

Praca ta jest o społeczności, jaką stworzyli Głusi. Ich tożsamości, kulturze, języku i barierach, jakie napotykają na swojej drodze. Przedstawia środowisko osób Głuchych, jako mniejszość kulturowo - językową. Głuchota jest pod tym względem wyjątkowa, że żadna inna niepełnosprawność, nie stwarza tak silnej tożsamości kulturowej, językowej i środowiskowej jak ta. Kluczowy problem stanowi fakt, że słyszący nie dostrzegają wartości, jakie niesie ze sobą Kultura Głuchych, ich wspólnota oraz język. Niewłaściwe myślenie na temat osób głuchych polega na dokonywaniu złej oceny.Podstawową dostrzeganą różnicą jest fakt, że jedni słyszą, drudzy nie, a więc świat tych drugich jest niekompletny. Niesłyszący traktowani są, jako niepełnosprawna część społeczeństwa, którą nic, oprócz ubytku słuchu nie wyróżnia. Aby słyszący mogli zrozumieć Głuchych, niezbędna jest zmiana w sposobie myślenia, która pozwoli postrzegać osoby Głuche nie jako niepełnosprawne, lecz jako mniejszość kulturowo - językową.

This bachelor thesis raises the issue of the community created by the Deaf, as well as their identity, culture, language and everyday life’s problems they face. It presents the environment of the Deaf as a cultural and linguistic minority. Unlike any other disability, deafness creates a strong cultural and linguistic identity. The main problem is that people without hearing difficulties cannot see the values of the deaf community, language and culture. Wrong way of thinking about this disability lays in bad judgment of the situation. The fundamental difference seen by the society is the fact that one group can hear and the other cannot, so its world must be incomplete. The Deaf are treated as a group of disabled people that cannot be distinguished by anything else but their deafness.In order to fully understand the deaf, it is necessary to change the way of our thinking and labeling this community not as a disabled group but as a cultural and linguistic minority.
