Herodotus as inheritor of the Homeric tradition

Niniejsza praca podejmuje kwestię naśladownictwa i adaptacji pewnych elementów właściwych epice homeryckiej w „Dziejach” Herodota. Poruszono w niej zagadnienia takie jak: ogólny stosunek poezji epickiej do dzieła Herodota, pojęcie kleos (sławy) i erga (wielkich czynów), stosunek do teraźniejszości i przeszłości, jaki przedstawiają obaj pisarze, wreszcie, postać narratora. Znaczące miejsce w pracy zajmuje problem słów i całych fraz, które historyk zapożyczył z poematów homeryckich. Niniejsza praca ma na celu wykazać, że historiografia w ujęciu Herodota bardzo wiele zawdzięcza tradycji epickiej, a jednocześnie zaczyna być już zupełnie nowym gatunkiem literackim.

This paper takes up the problem of emulation and adaptation of certain elements typical of the Homeric epic in Herodotus’ ‘Histories’, and analyzes the following issues: a general reference of epic poetry to the work of Herodotus, the idea of kleos (immortal fame) and erga (exploits), the attitude to the present and the past exhibited by both the writers, finally, the narrator’s figure. In this paper, special attention is paid to the issue of words and complete phrases which the historian had taken from Homeric poems. This thesis is aimed at proving that, on the one hand, the historiography according to Herodotus owns a lot to the epic tradition, but on the other, it already commences to become a completely new literary genre.
