Dark academia as the affective conversation with the past

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przybliżenie i omówienie zjawiska dark academia oraz przedstawienie go jako formy afektywnej konwersacji z przeszłością. Praca ukazuje zmiany, jakim ulegają powieści podgatunku „mroczna akademia” na przestrzeni lat. Analizie poddano trzy utwory: Stowarzyszenie umarłych poetów autorstwa Nancy Kleinbaum, Tajemna historia Donny Tartt oraz A jeśli jesteśmy złoczyńcami M. L. Rio. Przedstawiony jest również wpływ współczesnego odbiorcy na sposób kreacji świata dark academia. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów: w pierwszym omówione jest zjawisko „mrocznej akademii”, w drugim – ewolucja konkretnych wątków w dziełach tego podgatunku, w trzecim – rozważania na temat powodów rosnącego zainteresowania tymże trendem, zwłaszcza wśród młodych ludzi. Tekst zamykają wnioski oraz propozycje kontynuacji badań nad omawianym zagadnieniem.

The aim of this study is to describe and analyze the phenomen of the dark academia and to present it as a form of an affective conversation with the past. The paper shows the changes of the novels from the dark academia genre over the years. The three novels have been analized: Dead poets society written by Nancy Kleinbaum, The secret history by Donna Tartt and If we were villains by M. L. Rio. Additionally the nowaday’s reader’s influence on the world of the dark academia is presented. The paper contains three chapters: the first one describes the phenomen of the dark academia, the second one – the evolution of the significant threads in this genre’s novels, and the third one – considerations about the reasons of the growing interest of this trend, especially among young people. The summary contains the conclusions and suggestions of the further research on the described subject.
