dc.abstract.enThe following paper aims to explain the history of the copyright in music with the particular notion on artist's position and struggle with both law and record labels. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first part discusses the current legal protection of musical works based on international treaties and conventions and explores the divisions of various forms of protection. The second part focuses on the history of both the music industry and developing rights. The third part aims to explore the shift in the music industry which later resulted in the change of artist’s position and describes the importance of owning one’s master recordings with the notable example of Taylor Swift and her feud with Big Machine. In the fourth part, the latest legal changes in U.S. legal copyright system are discussed as well as the new paths for emerging artists.pl
