Trauma Wojny w Wybranych Dziełach Literatury Amerykańskiej i Indiańskiej

Literatura wojenna jest szeroką dziedziną literatury. Choć prawie każda wojna stała się tematem jakiegoś dzieła literatury, po pierwszej i drugiej wojnie światowej powieści wojenne zaczeły tworzyć odrębny nurt. W kulturze masowej panuje przekonanie, że powiści wojenne zajmuja się tylko żołnierzami i bitwami i przedstawiają walki i śmierć. Jednak w rzeczywistości literatura wojenna sięga o wiele dalej. Tak jak wojna nie pozwala na rzeczy zbędne lub górnolotne, tak literatura wojenna zanurza się głęboko w rdzeń emocji i myśli ludzkich, szukajać odpowiedzi na fundamentalne pytania leżące u podstawy bytu ludzkiego. Czy Bóg istnieje? Czy miłość jest silniejsza od nienawiści i potafi ją pokonać? Komu można zaufać? Czy istnieje miejsce bezpieczne? Czy można oszukac los? Czy istnieje granica za którą człowiek nie może już być zbawiony? Te i dziesiątki innych pytań znajdują się u podstaw literatury wojennej, traumy wojennej ale też wszelkich innych traum. Dlatego też szerokie grono czytelników może odnaleźć spokój i wybaczenie, być może tym samym wykorzystać trochę dla siebie. Ta praca magisterska zajmuje się tym zagadnieniem. Koncentruje się na traumie wywołanej wojną, przedstawionej z punktu widzenia kilku zupełnie od siebie różnych żołnierzy. Mimo tego, że ich pochodzenie i historie bardzo się od siebie różnią, to ich wojenne doświadczenia są bardzo zbliżone. Najciekawsze jest to, że ich poszukiwania uśmierzenia bolu, choć rozpoczęte w różnych miejscach, przebiegają podobnie, prowadzą do podobnych odpowiedzi i prawie identycznych konkluzji, udowadniając tym samym, że pomimo tylu widocznych różnic istnieje pewna jedność i wspólność ludzka, i że my wszyscy w istocie jesteśmy tacy sami.

War literature is a broad genre of literature. Although nearly every war has found a place in some literary work, war fiction began to create itself a seperate identity after World War I and II. In mainstream culture there is a notion that war fiction deals only with soldiers and battles and depicts only fighting and killing. In truth, however, fiction pertaining to war reaches much further. As war does not allow for anything unnecessary or pompous, so fiction dealing with war digs deep down to the core of human emotion and thought, searching to answer the primal questions at the base of human existence. Is there a God? Is love strong enough against hate to defeat it? Who can one trust? Is there any place that is safe? Can fate be cheated? Is there a line after which one cannot be saved? These and many more questions can be found at the core of war fiction and the trauma of war, but also all other kinds of trauma. In consequence, an incredibly vast number of readers can relate to the search for solace and forgiveness, perhaps finding some for themselves. This thesis will deal with exactly this issue. Its focus is on the trauma created by war from the points of view of several completely different soldiers. Their backgrounds are practically not at all similar, but their war experiences are more so. What is most interesting is that their quests for healing from their pain, though begun at different points, take a similar road, lead to similar answers and nearly identical conclusions, proving that there is, despite so many numerous differences, a oneness and universality among people; that we are all, at the core, the same.
