Romance and ancient philosophy in John Lyly's "Campaspe"

Niniejsza praca traktuje o pierwszej komedii Johna Lyly, Campaspe, w której autor zawarł liczne nawiązania do kultury antycznej. Na początku pracy zostaje wprowadzona biografia Lyly’ego, ogólne informacje na temat Campaspe oraz wykorzystane źródła, tj. przede wszystkim Historia naturalna Pliniusza, Żywot Aleksandra Plutarcha, Żywoty i poglądy słynnych filozofów Diogenesa Laertiosa oraz Apophthegmata Erazma. Szczegółowe przedstawienie treści utworu w głównej części pracy stanowi tło dla wskazania i analizy nawiązań antycznych dotyczących dwóch głównych wątków: miłości Apellesa i Campaspe oraz filozofii Diogenesa z Synopy, które łączy osoba Aleksandra Wielkiego. Koniec pracy stanowi określenie typu utworu, charakterystyka stylu Lyly’ego oraz podsumowanie najważniejszych punktów pracy.

The present thesis deals with the first comedy of John Lyly, Campaspe, in which numerous references to ancient culture were contained. At the beginning of the thesis, the biography of the author, general information about Campaspe and used sources were introduced, i.e. most of all Pliny’s Natural History, Plutarch’s Life of Alexander, Diogenes Laertius’ Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers and Erasmus’ Apophthegmata. The detailed presentation of comedy’s contents in the main body becomes a background for pointing out and analyzing ancient references of two main plots: love between Apelles and Campaspe, and philosophy of Diogenes of Sinope, which are connected by Alexander the Great. The determination of comedy’s type, Lyly’s style characteristics and summary marks the end of the thesis.
