The Mexican identity in the border reality. The analysis of The Crystal Frontier by Carlos Fuentes

Niniejsza praca magisterska dotyczy problematyki tożsamości narodowej meksykanina w pogranicznej rzeczywistości. Aby zbadać tę kwestię, przeanalizowano wizerunek meksykanina w Kryształowej granicy (1995) autorstwa Carlosa Fuentesa. Ponadto jako podstawę do badań w tym zakresie wzięto pod uwagę badania Samuela Ramosa, Octavio Paza i Rogera Bartry. Przedstawiono także wydarzenia historyczne, które okazały się decydujące podczas kształtowania się meksykańskiej tożsamości narodowej oraz odkreślenia charakteru relacji między Meksykiem a USA. Ponieważ różnice między tymi dwoma krajami są bardzo duże, kontekst graniczny jest niezbędny dla właściwej analizy tożsamości Meksykanów, gdyż bliskość USA oddziałuje na ten naród.

This master's thesis concerns the issues of the national identity of a Mexican living in the borderline reality. The thesis draws a lot from the image of Mexicans presented in The Crystal Border (1995) by Carlos Fuentes. Furthermore, the studies of Samuel Ramos, Octavio Paz and Roger Bartra were taken into account as a basis for the ideas developed in the thesis. Historical events that proved decisive during the formation of Mexican national identity with the emphasis on the character of the relations between Mexico and the USA were also presented. Since the differences between the two countries are very large, a border context is essential for a proper analysis of the identity of Mexicans, as the proximity of the USA affects this nation.

El presente trabajo trata sobre el tema de la identidad nacional del mexicano en la realidad fronteriza. Para estudiar esta questión, se analizó la imagen del mexicano en la obra de Carlos Fuentes titulada La frontera de cristal (1995). Como base para los estudios en este campo, se tomaron en consideración los ensayos de Samuel Ramos, Octavio Paz, y Roger Bartra. Se exponen también los acontecimientos históricos decisivos para la formación de la identidad nacional mexicana, poniendo el hincapié en el carácter de las relaciones entre México y los EE.UU. Como las diferencias entre estos dos países son muy grandes, el contexto fronterizo es esencial para el apropiado análisis de la identidad del mexicano ya que la proximidad de los EE.UU. ejerce influencia sobre esta nación.
