The Beat Generation literature and milieu in New York in the 1950s and 1960s: an analysis of the feminist thought.

Praca podejmuje tematykę twórczości literackiej kobiet, działających w ramach formacji Beat Generation w Stanach Zjednoczonych w latach 50. i 60. XX wieku. Postarano się wyjaśnić i udowodnić twierdzenie, iż twórczość oraz działalność bitniczek została w historii literatury amerykańskiej zmarginalizowana lub pominięta – jedynie mężczyźni-bitnicy mieli przestrzeń do zaistnienia jako artyści i w efekcie zapisania się w ogólnej świadomości społecznej. Przybliżono twórczość bitniczek oraz prześledzono tematy, którymi zajmowały się w swoim bogatym dorobku literackim i życiowym. Celem niniejszej pracy było zbadanie zalążków myśli feministycznej w USA poprzez uwzględnienie mało podejmowanego w literaturze przedmiotu wpływu twórczości bitniczek na kształtowanie się Generacji Beatu oraz powojennej świadomości feministycznej w ogóle w oparciu o analizę m.in poezji, biografii, wspomnień oraz innych form twórczości prozatorskiej pisarek bitnikowskich. Praca składa się ze wstępu, czterech rozdziałów, zakończenia oraz bibliografii wykorzystanych źródeł naukowych. Zawiera historyczno-teoretyczne wprowadzenie na temat subkulturowego pochodzenia i działalności Beat Generation wraz z przedstawieniem środowiska nowojorskiej bohemy artystycznej lat 50. XX wieku. W pracy dokonano przeglądu twórczości prozatorskiej i poetyckiej bitników oraz bitniczek, m.in: Jacka Kerouaca, Kennetha Rexrotha, Diane di Primy, Janine Pommy Vegi, Brendy Frazer, Hettie Jones, Joyce Johnson, Anne Waldman.

The thesis examines the literary work of women beat writers who were a part of the Beat Generation movement in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. It was endeavored to prove and claim the statement that the literary output and activity of the women beatniks were marginalized or completely omitted in the history of American literature, making a space to create for only men writers of the Beat Generation and in effect, promoting them and their literature in the public awareness. An attempt was made to present the women beat writers’ works and to retrace the subject matters that they were focusing on in their writings, as well as their lives. The purpose of the thesis was to study the role and impact of women writers on the Beat Generation and to find the stirrings of the post-war feminist thought based on their writings, e.g. poetry, biographies, memoirs and other forms of prose. The thesis consists of an introduction, four chapters, conclusions and a bibliography with literary sources. It contains a theoretical and historical introduction to the subject of sub-cultural origins of the Beat Generation, and it also presents the New York bohemian artstic milieu in the 1950s. The work features the overview of selected writings of beatniks, a.o. Jack Kerouac, Kenneth Rexroth, Diane di Prima, Janine Pommy Vega, Brenda Frazer, Hettie Jones, Joyce Johnson, Anne Waldman.
