Art Nouveau Doors in Żywiec – A Contribution to Studies Upon Material Culture of the Town

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza secesyjnej stolarki drzwiowej w Żywcu. W pierwszej części pracy przedstawiono motywację autora do podjęcia badań oraz zdefiniowano styl secesyjny, uwzględniając jego lokalne odmiany. W dalszej części autor przedstawia zarys historii drzwi w kulturze oraz ich symbolikę, a także objaśnia znaczenie ornamentów pojawiających się na wybranych przykładach drzwi z Żywca. Autor wzbogaca analizę odwołując się także do wzorników stolarki drzwiowej, które wykorzystywali stolarze na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, a ponadto opisuje działalność rzemieślników żywieckich we wspomnianym okresie. Część druga pracy to katalog trzydziestu jeden secesyjnych drzwi z Żywca. Pracę zamyka Zakończenie, spis ilustracji oraz bibliografia.

The aim of the thesis is to analyze Art Nouveau door woodwork in Żywiec. The dissertation begins with Introduction regarding the author's motivation for the research and a short overview of the Art Nouveau style along with the context of its regional varieties. The author also provides readers with most important contexts and backgrounds, such as a brief history of doors in culture and their symbolism, as well as the meaning of ornaments appearing on the selected examples of doors from Żywiec. The analysis is enriched by including the door carpentry pattern books, which carpenters used at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and descriptions of Żywiec craftsmen practice during that period. The second part of the work is a catalogue of thirty-one Art Nouveau doors. The thesis closes with Conclusion, List of Illustrations and Bibliography.
