The Image of a Modern American Family in the Sitcom "Modern Family"

Celem mojej pracy licencjackiej jest zbadanie struktury i charakterystyki nowoczesnych rodzin amerykańskich. Za materiał bazowy do badań posłużył mi amerykański sitcom „Modern Family”, który prezentuje obraz i złożoność nowoczesnych rodzin zamieszkujących Stany Zjednoczone. Dzięki analizie wizerunków rodzin amerykańskich oraz ich telewizyjnych przedstawień od połowy XX wieku do współczesności, możemy zaobserwować postępującą ewolucję znaczenia rodziny. Przeanalizowany został także gatunek, jakim jest sitcom oraz jego złożoność i sposób, w jaki oddziałuje na rzeczywistość. Metodą badawczą jaką zastosowałam w pracy jest analiza zawartości audiowizualnej, a dokładnie analiza poszczególnych odcinków sitcomu „Modern Family”. Zgromadzone materiały dowodzą, że rodzina amerykańska od lat 40./50. XX wieku przeszła ogromne przeobrażenia. Zmiany społeczne, kulturowe oraz polityczne w Stanach Zjednoczonych przyczyniły się do ewolucji społeczeństwa oraz postrzegania i struktury współczesnych rodzin.

The purpose of my undergraduate thesis is to examine the structure and characteristics of modern American families. I used the American sitcom "Modern Family" as the base material for my research, which presents the image and complexity of modern families living in the United States. By analyzing the images of American families and their television representations from the mid-twentieth century to the present, we can observe the progressive evolution of the meaning of family. The sitcom genre has also been analyzed, as well as its complexity and the way it interacts with reality. The research method I used in this paper is audiovisual content analysis, specifically the analysis of individual episodes of the sitcom "Modern Family". The collected materials prove that the American family has undergone enormous transformations since the 1940s/50s. Social, cultural, and political changes in the United States have contributed to the evolution of society and the perception and structure of modern families.
