In View of the Silence of God. Religious and Moral Dilemmas of the Characters of the Stories by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz: The Mill on the Lutynia, The Mill on the Kamionna, The Church in Skaryszew

Kwestia wiary i moralności zawsze zajmowała ważne miejsce w twórczości Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza. Te zagadnienia szczególnie istotną rolę pełniły w jego utworach o tematyce wojennej. W tej pracy analizie poddano trzy opowiadania przedstawiające problemy jednostek wynikające z doświadczenia wojny i okupacji. Cel badania stanowiło ukazanie relacji pomiędzy bohaterami tych opowiadań a milczącym Bogiem w czasach II wojny światowej. W pracy podjęto próbę odnalezienia wartości oraz istoty człowieczeństwa i ukazanie dylematów, przed którymi stali ludzie w świecie opanowanym przez zło. Religia i zasady moralne ustalone przez przodków nie były wystarczające w tym czasie. Badanie ukazuje działania bohaterów prowadzące do przywrócenia sprawiedliwości. Rozważaniom podjęto także kwestię poczucia samotności i opuszczenia zwłaszcza ze strony Boga. W pracy starano się zbadać wybory dokonywane przez bohaterów oraz zanalizować ich zachowania i słuszność podejmowanych przez nich decyzji, a także na nowo zdefiniować relacje pomiędzy człowiekiem a Bogiem w ciemnych czasach. Prowadzi do odnalezienia wspólnego języka z Bogiem i naprawienia komunikacji między nimi poprzez określenie istoty problemu.

The question of faith and morals was always very important in works of Iwaszkiewicz. These issues were particularly essential in his works of war. The thesis contains analyzes of three stories about the problems of individuals in the face of war and occupation. Aim of the study was the human experience during the Second World War and, above all, to show the relationship between the characters of these stories and silent God. The study attempted to find values and essence of humanity and show the dilemmas of the people which stood in a world dominated by evil. Religion and moral principles established by the ancestors were not sufficient at that time. The work showed the actions of the characters leading to the restoration of justice. The thesis contemplated also issues of loneliness and abandonment especially by God. The works investigated choices made by the characters, and analyze their behavior and the validity of decisions taken by them, and also to redefine the relationship between man and God in dark times. They attempted to find a common language with God and repaired the communication between them by setting the essence of this problem.
