The aim of this paper is to analyze the modern conceptions of the city and to evidence that the architecture of sustainable development is a natural response to some negative tendencies of the contemporary world. Looking at the city as a cultural idea, also within non-European conceptions, I show that the philosophy of sustainable development and eco-philosophy - along with the city architecture that seems to accompany them - can reinforce human subjectivity and his responsibility for the surrounding world.
