article
Raree-shows represent unique, still not properly researched, forms of historical, puppet-like theatre, popular folk performances, registered only in relatively few textual and iconographical sources. The author of the articles discusses their hypothetical origins, complicated and mysterious history and evolution, possible metaphorical meanings in culture, and their representations in iconography (Raree-show /’t Fraay Curieus from 1718 by Willem van Mieris being the constant point of reference). The attempts have been taken to reconstruct both the performing techniques and the language used by the French-speaking itinerant “Savoyards” who used to wander across Western Europe with raree-shows from the 16th century onwards. Finally, due to the close reading of a Latin entry in the royal Polish expense register from 1506, Henryk Jurkowski’s theory that such a raree-show was presented in Kraków was strongly refuted.pl
