New Rhetoric and education : the case of Fénelon’s "Télémaque"

Nowa retoryka przypisuje nową rolę epideiktyce: staje się ona podstawą innych gatunków retorycznych. Ale to przewartościowanie epideiktyki powoduje również inną ważną zmianę: w argumentacji należy także uwzględniać dyskurs edukacyjny, który jest powiązany z gatunkiem epideiktycznym. Przygody Telemaka Fénelona (1699) uznaje się tutaj za przykład szczególnego funkcjonowania argumentacji. Z jednej strony, tekst ten można odczytywać jako zwykłą historię. Z drugiej zaś strony, komentatorzy zgadzają się co do występowania w nim wyraźnie zarysowanej nuty perswazji, w dążeniu tego, aby zmienić postawę wnuka Ludwika XIV. W niniejszej pracy proponuje się badania strategii argumentacyjnych zastosowanych w tym Bildungsroman ad usum delfini. Utwór Télémaque travesti (1714) Marivaux’a posłuży do zbadania strategii parodystycznego zaprzeczenia w perspektywie technik argumentacyjnych.

The New Rhetoric assigns a new role to epideictic: it becomes the foundation of other rhetorical genres. But this revalorization of epideictic also causes another important change: educative discourse, which is linked with epideictic genre, must also be included in the field of argumentation. Fénelon’s Télémaque (1699) is considered here as an example of specific argumentative functioning. On the one hand, the text can be read as a simple story. On the other hand, commentators agree as to the identification of a persuasive intention which is neatly delimited: the reformation of Louis XIV’s grandson. The present contribution proposes to study the argumentative strategies used in this Bildungsroman ad usum delfini. Marivaux’s Télémaque travesti (1714) will serve the purpose of examining a strategy of parodic refutation in the perspective of argumentative techniques.

La Nouvelle Rhétorique assigne un rôle nouveau à l’épidictique qui devient le fondement des autres genres rhétoriques. Nous voudrions montrer que cette revalorisation de l’épidictique entraîne un autre changement important : les discours éducatifs, fortement rapprochés du genre épidictique, doivent, à leur tour, être inclus dans le champ de l’argumentation. Le Télémaque de Fénelon (1699) offre un bon angle d’attaque pour examiner un fonctionnement argumentatif spécifique des discours éducatifs. D’une part, le texte se laisse lire comme un simple récit. D’autre part, les commentateurs s’accordent à identifier une intention persuasive nettement circonscrite : réformer le comportement du petit-fils de Louis XIV. La présente contribution se propose d’étudier les stratégies argumentatives utilisées par ce Bildungsroman ad usum delfini. Le Télémaque travesti de Marivaux (1714) sera convoqué pour examiner, sous l’angle des techniques argumentatives, une démarche de réfutation parodique.
