Alcatraz - from a maximum security prison to a symbol of the fight for rights of Indigenous Peoples

Niniejszą pracę postanowiłam podzielić na trzy części. Pierwsza jest wprowadzeniem do tematu resocjalizacji w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Poczynając od historii pierwszych obozów jenieckich w USA ściśle związanych z Wojną Secesyjną, po opis wielu rozwiązań podejmowanych w zakładach karnych. Dane liczbowe przytaczane w pierwszym rozdziale mają na celu uzmysłowienie odbiorcom skali poszczególnych problemów.Drugi, najdłuższy rozdział poświęciłam zakładowi penitencjarnemu na wyspie w zatoce San Francisco – tytułowemu Alcatraz. W tej z kolei części mojej pracy, opisałam historię legendarnej „Skały”, najsłynniejszych więźniów byłego zakładu penitencjarnego na tej wyspie, a także zasady tam panujące. Oprócz tego, czytelnik znajdzie tam również szczegóły dotyczące wielokrotnych prób ucieczek skazańców, oraz ich konsekwencje.Ostatni rozdział zawiera informacje na temat głośnej okupacji Alcatraz przez Indian, wydarzenia z 1969r. , oraz dzisiejszego statusu obiektu na „Wyspie Pelikanów”.

I have decided to divide this thesis into three parts. The first one is an introduction to the subject of convicts’ rehabilitation in the United States. Starting from the history of the first camps for prisoners in the USA, closely connected with the Secession War, to the description of the penitentiary system, and many solutions taken in prisons. In the first chapter there are many figures which are intended to make the reader aware of the scale of the problem described in the specific paragraph. The second, longest chapter is devoted to the prison on the island in the bay of San Francisco - the title Alcatraz. In this part of my thesis, I described the history of the legendary "Rock", the most famous prisoners of the former prison on this island, and also the principles that prevail in there. Apart from that, the reader will also find there details concerning repeated attempts of escape of convicts, as well as consequences resulting from this type of situation. The last chapter contains information about the famous occupation of Alcatraz by the Indians, and about what is happening today with the popular direction of trips in the USA - the "Pelican Island".
