Between the formal and the informal : the limits of verbal (im)politeness in peninsular Spanish

The objective of this article is to analyze certain uses of informal language in peninsular Spanish that ELE learners and speakers of other languages could interpret as impolite. The study covers three levels: the morphosyntactic (forms of treatment), the interactional and the lexical (bad expressions), in addition to providing reflections on the contrasts that the Polish and Spanish languages can offer in this field. The verbal politeness approach is applied, based on the distinction between the values of affiliation and autonomy, which seems to offer the necessary interpretive filter to understand why such uses are not only acceptable, but even desirable. Likewise, speakers of other languages, based on the concept of affiliation, can better understand the pragmatic-cultural contexts and the cases of combination of formal and informal language in peninsular Spanish.

El objetivo del presente artículo es mostrar determinados usos del lenguaje informal en el español peninsular que los aprendientes de ELE y hablantes de otros idiomas podrían interpretar como descorteses. El estudio abarca tres niveles: el morfosintáctico (formas de tratamiento), el interaccional y el léxico (expresiones malsonantes), además de brindar reflexiones acerca de los contrastes que pueden ofrecer en este campo el idioma polaco y el español. Se aplica el enfoque de cortesía verbal, basado en la distinción entre los valores de afiliación y autonomía, que parece ofrecer el filtro interpretativo necesario para entender por qué tales usos no solo son aceptables, sino, incluso, deseables. Asimismo, los hablantes de otros idiomas, al fundamentarse en el concepto de afiliación, pueden comprender mejor los contextos pragmático-culturales y los casos de combinación del lenguaje formal e informal en el español peninsular.
