The problem of the authorship of the architectural frame of the tomb of St. John Kanty in St. Anne’s Church in Krakow against the background of the output of the selected early modern painters designing architectural works.

Niniejsza praca magisterska podejmuje zagadnienie autorstwa oprawy architektonicznej grobu świętego Jana Kantego znajdującego się w kościele świętej Anny w Krakowie w odniesieniu do twórczości wybranych malarzy nowożytnych zajmujących się również projektowaniem dzieł architektonicznych.Na podstawie zebranych informacji udało się udowodnić tezę, że Jerzy Eleuter Siemiginowski był bardzo dobrym kandydatem do sporządzenia projektu tzw. „konfesji” św. Jana Kantego, a powierzenie mu tego zadania stanowiło jedynie wyraz i potwierdzenie istniejącej tradycji podejmowania zamówień architektonicznych przez nowożytnych malarzy. Została również wyjaśniona, krytykowana przez badaczy, otwarta (tzn. pozbawiona zwieńczenia) kompozycja dzieła. W trakcie badań okazało się, iż zarówno w przypadku mauzoleum św. Jana Kantego, jak i dzieł innych malarzy, w szczególności nowożytnych kaplic grobowych, mamy do czynienia z przenikaniem się elementów architektonicznych, rzeźbiarskich i malarskich oraz prymatem spójności ikonograficznej nad poprawnością architektoniczną.

This thesis deals with the issue of the authorship of the mausoleum of St. John Kanty in St. Anne’s Church in Krakow with reference to the output of the selected early modern painters designing architectural works. On the basis of the collected information, it has been proved that Jerzy Eleuter Siemiginowski was an appropriate candidate for designing the architectural frame of the tomb of St. John Kanty and that entrusting him with this task reflected the tradition of undertaking architectural commissions by early modern painters. The problem of the often criticized open composition of the work, has also been clarified in the thesis. During the studies, it has turned out, that for both the mausoleum of St. John and works of other painters (especially early modern funeral chapels) occurs permeating architectural, sculptural and painting elements. Characteristic feature of this works is also the primacy of iconographic cohesion over architectural correctness.
