Grotesque, Family and Identity in Sono Shion's Films

Moja praca ma na celu przybliżenie sylwetki intrygującego japońskiego reżysera Shiona Sono. Jest on śmiałym artystą, lubi szokować i zaskakiwać, wykorzystuje groteskę, by ukazywać ambiwalencję ludzkiej natury, łączącej w sobie szlachetne emocje i mroczny atawizm. W centrum zainteresowania reżysera znajduje się rodzina - jako wspólnota ulegająca współcześnie licznym przeobrażeniom, konfliktom, patologiom i rozkładowi - oraz indywidualna tożsamość, odrębność. Poszukujący tych wartości filmowi bohaterowie są zagubieni, agresywni, niebezpieczni zarówno dla innych, jak i dla samych siebie. Filmografia Shiona Sono jest bogata i różnorodna, więc poddaje się rozmaitym interpretacjom. Starałem się wybrać z niej motywy najbardziej znaczące, oczywiste i występujące najczęściej.

I would like my thesis to approximate profile of intriguing Japanese filmmaker Sono Shion. His works are barely known in Poland, while being quite popular elsewhere outside of Japan. The artist is venturesome, he likes to shock and surprise, uses the grotesque in order to depict the ambiguity of human beings, who tend to be upstanding as well as atavistic sometimes. Among his favourite motives there is a family, as a comunity which submits to many conflicts, patology or desintegration, and personal identity, originality. People searching of these virtues are often stray, violent and dangerous for others and for themselves. Sono Shion's filmography is very differential and plentiful,, hence possible to be inerpreted in various ways. I tried to choose most meaningful, clear and obvious themes of it.
