Organizational culture and identity in the process of change management : results of empirical research

dc.abstract.enThe purpose of this paper is to identify barriers to change rooted in organizational culture as well as opportunities to reduce these barriers. Analysis of the literature indicates that organizational culture plays a key role in the process of organizational change, which means that in some situations it can act as a catalyst, while in others as an inhibitor, of change. Analysis of cultural barriers to organizational change was based on an empirical study carried out under the grant “Barriers to organizational changes in the culture of Polish hospitals” and the pilot studies preceding it (Jagiellonian University, Social Academy of Sciences 2010–2012). The paper begins with a description of the objectives, research questions, and methodology of the study. Subsequently, the study results are used to describe the characteristic cultural features of Polish hospitals, especially with regard to the change management process. Organizational cultures were analyzed to determine their characteristics. The study has identified symptoms of conservatism and cultural duality, which are manifestations of cultures creating barriers to organizational change.pl
