Mark Antony- historical truth and movie creation. An analysis of Mark Antony personality in TV series Rome in light of ancient sources.

Marek Antoniusz jest jedną z najbardziej znanych postaci starożytnego Rzymu. Inspiruje artystów i pisarzy swoim bogatym życiorysem. Jest znany głównie jako żołnierz Juliusza Cezara oraz kochanek królowej Kleopatry. Antyczni pisarze zostawili w źródłach bardzo negatywny obraz tej postaci. Jest to efekt działań Oktawiana Augusta, który pozbawił Antoniusza statusu i zniszczył jego podobizny. ten zabieg nazywamy "damnatio memoriae". Marek Antoniusz jest jedną z bardziej znaczących postaci w serialu "Rzym". Jest to amerykańsko brytyjska produkcja, która w 22 odcinkach pokazuje wydarzenia od 52 roku p.n.e. aż do śmierci Antoniusza w 30 roku p.n.e. W niniejszej pracy magisterskiej podjęłam się badań prowadzących do stwierdzenia na czym bazowali scenarzyści w tworzeniu serialu i czy bazą są źródła antyczne. Porównałam wydarzenia serialowe z ich odpowiednikami opisanymi w dziełach antycznych.Praca składa się z siedmiu rozdziałów. Pierwszy traktuje o Marku Antoniuszu, jego wizerunku i charakterze. Drugi o kobietach w życiu Antoniusza, a rozdział trzeci o jego przyjaźni z Juliuszem Cezarem. W czwartym przedstawiłam sytuacje, która nastąpiła w Rzymie po śmierci Cezara. W piątym z kolei relację między Markiem Antoniuszem a Cyceronem. Szósty traktuje o jego burzliwych stosunkach z Oktawiuszem. Siódmy, i ostatni, o jego związku z Kleopatrą.

Mark Antony is one of the most famous personalities of the ancient Rome. With his eventful life as a great soldier of Julius Caesar, Mark is an inspirition for artists and writers. Mark Antony is most commonly known as Cleopatra’s husband. Ancient writers have left very negative image of this Roman soldier. This is the effect of the Octavius Augustus’ doing, as he revoked Antony’s status and removed his statues. This procedure was called damnatio memoriae. Mark Antony is one of the most important characters in the Rome TV series. This American British production of 22 episodes shows history from 52 BC till Antony’s death – 30 BC. In this master’s thesis I have conducted research as to what was the inspiration of Rome’s scriptwriters. I have compared the TV series with classical literature to prove which antique resources the producers used to create the screenplay about Mark Antony. This thesis consists of seven chapters. The first one is about Mark Antony’s character and personality. The second one is about the most important women in his life. In the third one, I have presented Mark Antony’s relations with Julius Caesar. The following chapter presents the situation in Rome after Caesar’s death. In the fifth chapter, I have described report between Antony and Cicero and in the next one his relations with Gaius Octavius. The last one is about Mark Antony’s relationship with Cleopatra.
