An analysis of second and third wave feminist themes in the series “Twin Peaks"

Celem niniejszej pracy dyplomowej jest kompleksowe przedstawienie analizy postaci kobiecych w pierwszych dwóch sezonach serialu „Miasteczko Twin Peaks” oraz wykazanie, czy w produkcji występują wątki feministyczne II i III fali. Dodatkowo, by lepiej zrozumieć problematykę nastrojów panujących na prowincji Stanów Zjednoczonych lat 90-tych ubiegłego wieku, dokonano wyjaśnienia pojęć związanych z post-feminizmem oraz ruchem „girl power”.Praca została podzielona na trzy rozdziały, z czego każdy z nich charakteryzuje się odmiennym dyskursem. Pierwsza część skupia się głównie na wyjaśnieniu i rozwinięciu pojęć koniecznych do zrozumienia różnic pomiędzy poszczególnymi falami feminizmu. Natomiast pozostałe poświęcono działaniom i motywom konkretnych postaci, reprezentujących nurty tj. „girl-power”, temat budowania kariery zawodowej lub seksualności. Podczas analizy nie podjęto się jedynie problematyki feminizmu jako ogólnej, ale również szczegółowym przedstawieniem tematu przemocy fizycznej i ekonomicznej względem kobiet, aktywności zawodowej postaci, a także ich autonomii jako jednostek w społeczeństwie. Podczas przebiegu badań wzięto pod uwagę nie tylko sposoby postępowania bohaterek w produkcji, ale również ich stosunek do partnera i innych członków społeczności, a także rozwój wewnętrzy poszczególnych kobiet. Rezultatem niniejszych badań było utworzenie wielowymiarowych, szczegółowych profili postaci kobiecych występujących w serialu, a także wykazanie związku między bohaterkami, a ewolucją feminizmu przypadającą na lata 90-te.

The main aim of this thesis is to present an complex analysis of female characters from the first two seasons of the series “Twin Peaks” as well as to prove whether motives of Second and Third-wave feminist exist in the following production. Furthermore, in order to better the understanding of the issues prevailing in the provisional part of the United Stated in the 1990s, the link between post-feminism and the “girl power” movement were also analyzed. The thesis has been divided into three chapters, each of which being characterized whilst using a different discourse. The first part focuses mainly on explaining and developing meanings of the concepts necessary to comprehend the significant differences between various waves of feminism. Whereas the other parts were, on the other hand, devoted to the agendas of specific series characters representing trends such as “girl-power”, the matter of carrier building or sexuality. Whilst analyzing, the author of this paper not only taken up the issue about feminism in general, but also detailed presentation of the topic regarding physical as well as economic violence against women, professional activity of some of the characters and their autonomy, and place in the society. During the research, not only the ways how female character behaved were analyzed, but also theirs approach towards partners and other members of the closest community. What is more, the discourse about the internal development of individual women was also taken into account. The main result of the research was the composition of multidimensional, detailed profiles of the heroines that had appeared in the series, as well as demonstrating the link between the “Twin Peaks” heroines and the evolution of feminism in the 90s.
