Underground radioactive waste repositories and their relationships with tectonics

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie warunków tektonicznych i geologicznych, odpowiednich dla powstawania nowoczesnych podziemnych składowisk odpadów promieniotwórczych. Ponieważ repozytoria tego typu są inwestycjami długoterminowymi, udział procesów geologicznych i budowy tektonicznej jest kluczowy przy wyborze miejsc ich powstawania. Temat jest ważny również z perspektywy Polski, gdzie planowane jest powstanie elektrowni atomowej. Temat został wybrany ze względu na jego wysoką perspektywiczność oraz wysoką wagę dla przyszłości przemysłu jądrowego świata. W pracy przedstawię i omówię sposoby składowania odpadów radioaktywnych oraz wybrane składowiska. Dwa najbardziej rozbudowane projekty repozytoriów geologicznych, omówione w niniejszej pracy to projekt „Onkalo” w Finlandii oraz projekt „Cigeo” we Francji. Na ich przykładach przedstawione zostały schematy techniczne tego typu składowisk oraz skomplikowane procedury wyboru ich lokalizacji. Przeanalizowany został także wpływ tektoniki na bezpieczeństwo składowania, jak również możliwe zagrożenia, jakie może nieść ze sobą składowanie radioaktywnych odpadów przez kilkadziesiąt tysięcy lat.

The aim of the study is to present the tectonic and geological conditions suitable for the creation of modern underground radioactive waste repositories. Since this type of repositories are long-term investments, the participation of geological processes and tectonic structure is of key importance, when choosing the places of their formation. The topic is also important from the perspective of Poland, where the construction of a nuclear power plant is planned. The topic was chosen due to its high perspective and high importance for the future of the world's nuclear industry. In the work I will present and discuss the methods of radioactive waste storage and selected repositories. The two most extensive geological repository projects discussed in this paper are the Onkalo project in Finland and the Cigeo project in France. Their examples show the technical diagrams of this type of landfills and the complicated procedures for selecting their location. The impact of tectonics on the safety of storage was also analyzed, as well as possible threats that may be associated with the storage of radioactive waste for several tens of thousands of years.
