Celem tej pracy jest analiza użycia alegorii w fikcji Flannery O’Connor, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem połączenia alegorii z realizmem. Ponadto, praca ta porusza temat obecności ironii i groteski w kontekście alegorii realistycznej. Te dwa zabiegi stylistyczne nie tylko pomagają w kreowaniu alegorii, lecz również mają inne zastosowania, takie jak tworzenie więzi z czytelnikiem polegającej albo na wytykaniu jego wad albo na wpływaniu na jego wyobraźnię. Ta praca bierze także pod uwagę realistyczne miejsce akcji, jakim jest Południe Stanów Zjednoczonych oraz katolicką wiarę pisarki, które są kluczowe dla interpretacji jej fikcji. Dodatkowo podjęty jest temat wprowadzenia brutalnych scen i ich roli w procesie przemiany duchowej bohaterów. W tej pracy interpretowane są trzy opowiadania O’Connor, czyli: „Poczciwi wiejscy ludzie”, „Trudno o dobrego człowieka” oraz „Objawienie”. Opowiadania te posiadają elementy religijne, takie jak Boża łaska (grace) czy Boska tajemnica (mystery) i dlatego są analizowane zgodnie z przekonaniami samej O’Connor. Te dwie niezwykle istotne dla O’Connor idee są często obecne w momentach kulminacyjnych jej opowiadań i są połączone z alegorią.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the use of allegory in Flannery O’Connor’s fiction. It focuses on the relation between realism and the allegorical elements. Moreover, it comments on irony and the grotesque in the context of realistic allegory. Those two literary techniques support O’Connor’s allegory but also have other purposes, such as creating a special relation with the readers by either ridiculing them or affecting their imagination. This thesis also takes into consideration the realistic setting of the US South, as well as O’Connor’s Catholic faith, which are crucial for interpreting her works. Furthermore, the introduction of violent events is also analysed in the context of its purpose in spiritual transformations of the characters. This paper analyses three of O’Connor’s short stories, namely “Good Country People,” “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Revelation.” Since the stories possess religious elements in them, they are interpreted according to O’Connor’s own beliefs and the interpretation focuses on the notions of divine grace and mystery, both extremely important for the author. They are strictly intertwined with allegorical imagery and are often present in the climaxes of the short stories.
