Metaphorical bridge (thoughts roughly related to an essay by Victor Pelevin)

Współczesny rosyjski pisarz Wiktor Pielewin (ur. 1962), znany czytelnikom głównie ze swych wysokonakładowych powieści jest także autorem kilku esejów. W niniejszym artykule analizie został poddany jeden z nich pt. Мост, который я хотел перейти (2001). W eseju tym motywy obecne zarówno we wczesnej twórczości pisarza, jak i w dziełach późniejszych (most, droga, rzeka, życie "po życiu", utracona szansa, dorastanie i in.) służą Pielewinowi do zilustrowania myśli nurtującej człowieka od wieków: co jest "po drugiej stronie", a więc jaki jest sens naszego życia? Pytanie owo zyskuje tu jednak ciekawy wyraz. Tytułowy most jest nie tylko obrazowym motywem ilustrującym rozważania o ludzkiej egzystencji. Sam esej przybiera bowiem kształt mostu: tekst jest skomponowany liniowo, ma pierścieniową strukturę. Ponadto frazy wyjawione w tekście jako znaczące powtarzają się w nim wyraźnym porządku i z określoną symetrią. Most symbolizuje więc w tekście Pielewina nie tylko łączenie dwóch przeciwległych brzegów, czy dwóch etapów życia człowieka, ale także łączenie (za pomocą mostu-­eseju) — autora i czytelnika.

Russian contemporary writer Victor Pelevin (born in 1962) is known to readers from to his novels published in large numbers of copies but he is also an author of several essays. This article is devoted to an analysis of one of them which is entitled The Bridge I Wanted to Cross (Мост, который я хотел перейти (2001)). The essay contains themes present both in his early writing and later works (bridge, road, river, life "after life", lost changes, growing up, etc.). They are used by Pelevin to illustrate the question that has been troubling man for ages: what is there "on the other side" and what is therefore the sense of our life? But this question is expressed here in a very interesting way. The bridge in the title is not only a picturesque motif that illustrates considerations about human existence. The essay itself has the form of a bridge as well: it is composed linearly and it has a ring structure. Moreover, phrases that are revealed as meaningful in the text are repeated in it in an explicit order and with specific symmetry. Thus, in Pelevin’s text, the bridge is the symbol of a connection between two opposite banks, that is two stages of human life, but also a connection (through the bridge in the form of an essay) between the author and the reader.
