The basis for the article is the empirical analysis of the on-line controversy taking place within a few months of 2017, surrounding the so-called TJLC narrative - the particular version of the development of the plot of the BBC tv series "Sherlock", aired in the years 2010-2017. The actions of the fans of the show point to the changes brought about by the participatory media in the larger area of social communication, and to the evolution of different concepts within the media themselves. The TLJC controversy sheds the interesting light on the evolution of the relationship between the media and the viewers (readers, players, and listeners) in the world where an increasingly larger proportion of the media content is being created by the media users. If the participatory culture leads to the change of the concept and the functioning of the authorship, intellectual property, creativity, media influence, and media responsibility towards public, then the fans may be the advance guard of these processes.
