Violence is a predominant code written in the protocols of modern war. Since the beginning of the 21st century, it has left an ever-increasing footprint in contemporary politics, both in its domestic and international dimensions. The post-Cold War global order, identified with cooperative security, inter-institutional arrangements, information networking and economic interdependencies, from the very beginning of its convoluted and arduous construction has been seriously challenged by state and non-state actors. The new security environment, permeated by complex globalised networks enabling a constant flow and exchange of goods, ideas, and capital by force of connectivity, was not immunised against violence. Ethnic feuds, territorial litigations, civil wars, insurgencies, organised crime and transnational terrorism have epitomised the ‘brave new world’ of ‘good old wars’. However, warfare is no longer synonymous with coercive force, lethal weapons, combat and assault. It has entailed much more sophisticated psychological, social, technological and economic means and methods which have determined the changing face of violence.pl
