Patron saints of churches
The article deals with the naming of parish and filial churches in the medieval towns of south and west Moravia. In the studied area, names were determined for 14 churches in royal towns, for 14 in feudal towns and for 80 in small towns. An analysis of the collected data revealed that the naming of churches in royal towns in particular differed from commonly used dedications. The most popular saints among the statistics taken as a whole, i.e. both urban and rural, were the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist and Wenceslaus, while in royal towns they were James the Greater, Nicholas and Michael. Consecrations of parish churches in feudal towns and small towns do not diverge greatly from traditional names. Particularly noteworthy is the dedication to St. Michael, which appears in the three largest medieval Moravian towns (Brno, Olomouc, Znojmo) under strikingly similar circumstances – the churches date to the period before the establishment of the medieval town and were built at prominent locations. In Olomouc, the site is apparently connected with an earlier, pre-Christian cult, which also cannot be ruled out in either Brno or Znojmo.
